It’s been nearly 4 months now since I wanted to get this bonnet sorted to shove onto the XA. It turned out that it was bent, so I have been on the lookout for another bonnet. Nothing comes up. No reproductions, no fibreglass and bugger all used ones. And the few used ones that did come up are asking a small fortune. And who knows if they are better than mine?
So I’ve been casually tinkering with mine in the mean time. It has now been decided that I will go ahead and use it, after trying to straighten the damn thing out! It’s not perfect, but it is usable, so I will paint it myself instead of forking out around 2 grand for a professional job.
With all the trial fitting me and my brother have been doing, it turns out that the chrome hinges are pretty rooted, so I will now fit the original hinges that came with the car when I bought it. So a few days ago I wire wheeled off all the original green paint and they are just about ready now for some primer and a coat of Monza Red. If these turn out to be not so good, then I will force myself to buy a set of reproduction hinges.
Today, I thought I’d start to get the bonnet ready, so I started sanding and grinding…..
Next up will be some bogging of the small dents that we have discovered.
